We couldn't be happier with Dewey Smart! Helping our daughter navigate the NYU application process for the Class of 2030 felt overwhelming given their low acceptance rate, but Dewey Smart was a game-changer. They helped her develop a unique 'theme' that connected her extracurriculars to her major at CAS, which really made her application stand out. Dasha, her essay coach, was top-notch. She helped our daughter find her voice without over-editing. Our daughter was accepted Early Decision, and we truly believe Dewey Smart made the difference. Highly recommend for any parent aiming for a top-tier school!
I paid more than $3K and had 2 sessions with them. Why would someone waste $3K on 2 sessions. It was bad enough to not waste time.First they showed a perfect mentor and switched her because she had too many students to help. Then they put another one who was equally swamped. We couldn't get a college list recommendation from the advisor or either of the mentors when they had gone towards similar career path. Basically one has to do one's own research and just bounce stuff off them. Can I get a template for a research report. Sorry, cant share even a template. But then the advisor would want to sell a whole research stream service on the side. We were offered to get advisory on applying for aid/ FAFSA and each of them is a separate fee. Save your money. Go with one on one services. These guys are slave master with 8+ candidates per advisor student alongside a full time post grad workload.
Dewey Smart was a huge disappointment. All the counselors were college students with no real experience. My child is a senior, and the ones assigned to us were completely unprofessional. Their calendars were booked weeks into admission season, and even then, they kept canceling at the last minute. We ended up using barely 2 hours of actual service in three months because no one was available or responsive. The so-called “guaranteed internships” are a total scam — they just send a list of random links, half of which don’t even work. No one actually helps or guides you through anything.Their website is slow, buggy, and badly managed. The only good thing is they refunded the money, but by then we had already lost valuable time we should have spent working on essays early. If you care about your child’s college applications, avoid Dewey Smart. They waste time and give you nothing useful in return.
The salespeople are con-artists. They courted us in the beginning and then ghosted us. We are still due sessions and credits that we'll never see again. Their "near -peer" feature is an attempt to differentiate themselves but the tutors we worked with were disasters. They are busy with their college lives and so they were constantly rescheduling and there were no-shows. Dewey brags about having Ivy League tutors. Every service that. Plus, what does it matter if the tutor is at Harvard if they don't show up for the session. My student was trying to take the SAT in August but couldn't get enough sessions scheduled. We even talked to their rep, Emerson, about it and he said it wouldn't be a problem. But then it was. There are a ton of effective tutoring companies. Prep Pros, PrepScholar, Magoosh, Kaplan, Wyzant, Khan Academy. Choose any one of these before you consider Dewey. In the end my student used another service and hit a 1550. He is now going to a Forbes New Ivies.
To all parents looking for counseling and essay help for your kids. Please don’t hire Dewey smart. They are nothing but catfish. I paid in full for a 10 hr class for college Counseling and 5 hr for SAT prep based on their info on the website and initial conversation. It looked promising. The counselors they picked for me were mere college students with no counseling experience and none from those listed on their fake website. The portal assigned to us for scheduling never worked. IT IS A FAKE COLLEGE PROGRAM WHOSE ONLY GOAL IS TO LOOT THE MONEY OF FAMILIES. Their portal doesn’t work, their entire brand is a fraud, and even worse all their counselors are uneducated college students who don’t have any strong heart for their students and who don’t want to help their students at all. They don’t refund their clients, even further showing that they only care about the money. Please avoid this at all costs and I would even recommend my neighbor as a college counselor than them because of how awful they are. Seriously, anyone who even is contemplating about even trying this service needs to seriously rethink their standards. Because of this, we are 5,000 dollars short of what we had before. This is one of the worst decisions I have ever made in my entire life. SCAM SCAM SCAM. Save your money folks. Let’s put a demise to this fake college business.
We signed up for Dewey Smart’s 40-hour counseling program expecting expert guidance, but were very disappointed. We eventually had to leave their services after a few months—it was more of a time waste, and we made better progress working on our own. The counselors assigned were college students who lacked the experience to guide us beyond generic responses. Despite sharing detailed feedback multiple times, our concerns were ignored and our card was charged without notice, we were never even provided with the receipt of our payment and the signed agreement. Communication was poor, and leadership was unresponsive. This service may be useful for essay editing and applications where students do have personal experience, but not for comprehensive college counseling. Would not recommend for families seeking serious, personalized guidance.DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY —but if you truly can’t find any other counseling service on earth, do yourself a favor and start with just a few hours. Believe me, you’ll save your money.
