Prebooking is basically pointless.

I booked a trip VERY early because I was taking and paying for my whole family on a trip to Vancouver and I knew prices would skyrocket. I found an apartment in Marpole which looked lovely. I put a deposit down with Danni on what was a £2,100 stay. 4 months later I got a text from Airbnb saying 'booking cancelled'. I queried it and was told by Danni that Airbnb delisted her property for lack of a document and that she would rectify the issue and reinstate the booking. OK I thought fine. So the next day the listing is back up and Im told I can rebook. Except now the price is £4,300.. I query this, and I'm told that she will offer me a 30% discount and that I can book directly off airbnb if I want to save on fees. I queried back saying Id rather not book off airbnb, and the price is double and why should I pay £800 more for the booking I made because you forgot to submit a document. Her response was this has worked out well for her because all her prebookings were cancelled so theyll all have to be rebooked at a higher price. Wow I thought, so you're you're actually admitting that you're not going to honour anyone's prices at the time of booking, and simply double up on your earnings because of a mistake you made. When asked if I wanted to rebook my view was, well, not if you;re going to do this to me again in six months and make me pay yet another two grand over the odds, so I'll pass thanks. I mentioned that I thought this practice was quite nasty really and she said my reply was rude, that there was no way she'd give me a 50% discount (it's not a discount, it was the rate I paid when I booked first time round) and then she blocked me. The reason for the extra stars is to be fair to Airbnb, after telling me 'thats life' and doing nothing about it, they replied to me again, helped me find a better place in downtown rather than 20 mins away in Marpole, and gave me a cash discount of over £400, in addition to transferring my deposit over, and gave me a rebooking discount of £70. So basically I got a much better place right in the centre of town for my family of five, for about a hundred quid more than the cost of my original booking. So, fingers crossed my new booking actually stays booked, cause it seems hosts can just delist and relist their properties and that automatically cancels all bookings, which then have to be rebooked at the current market value, not what was charged at the time of booking. That's a major floor in the service and something people are going to exploit. Especially in cases where there's an event announced (eg World Cup 2026 in Vancouver) which drives up rates considerably. So basically, don't rely on being able to book a place well in advance, but fair play for the airbnb support team.
