My first vanlife experience — and it was amazing!

I recently went on a 5-day Collaboration Trip traveling from New York to Philadelphia, then to Washington D.C., and finally to Boston — all in a Dodge Grand Caravan that I actually lived in the entire time. This was my first-ever experience not only renting a vehicle for travel, but also using it as my home on the road. From the very beginning, communication with the company was excellent — super clear, friendly, and responsive. Everything was well explained, I got detailed instructions, and both the pickup and return process were smooth and easy. The van itself was perfectly prepped and ready to go, exactly as described — clean, well-organized, and thoughtfully equipped. It made the entire experience stress-free and enjoyable right from the start.I specifically chose a compact minivan instead of a large motorhome or RV, because I’d heard about all the challenges that come with bigger rigs — parking restrictions, designated RV areas, risks of being fined or told to leave if you’re not in an official RV spot. That sounded like too much hassle for a short, flexible trip. The beauty of a minivan like this is that it blends in — it looks just like a regular car. No stickers, no signs, no branding. That meant I could park almost anywhere, sleep inside without drawing attention, and never worry about being moved or fined. It gave me so much freedom. The van itself was really well set up. All the windows had blackout curtains, so I could get full darkness at night. The mattress was super comfortable, and I slept like a baby. They provided pillows, towels, a full kitchen kit, including a portable stove with a gas canister, cookware, and even a tent and camping chairs. There was also a cooler-style fridge where I could store ice and keep food fresh. There’s a ton of space inside. I was traveling solo, but I’m confident two people would be totally comfortable — even cozy. Of course, there’s no built-in toilet or shower, but that wasn’t a problem at all. I used gyms in the cities I visited to shower, and public restrooms were easy to find. One of the biggest benefits for me was flexibility. I could change my route on the fly. One night, I was driving late — around midnight — and I realized I was too tired to keep going. I just pulled over in a quiet, safe spot and slept there. No need to stress about reaching a hotel or campsite. That kind of freedom is priceless.Overall, this was a fantastic experience. I loved the mobility, the comfort, and the fact that my bed was always with me. Compared to traditional RVs with kitchens and toilets onboard, this is a totally different kind of experience — and honestly, for short trips, way more convenient and low-stress.Would absolutely do it again — and highly recommend it if you’re looking for a practical, stealthy, and comfortable way to explore without being tied down to strict plans or limited by big vehicle logistics.
