When significant changes are expected, you shouldn't disable parts of the app during the transition. Instead, changes should be tested while the app operates normally until they can be fully implemented. Only foolish or dishonest entities would handle changes the way this service did. I plan to file a formal complaint with the appropriate authorities and urge others to do the same.
