Arrived after 9pm to find reception deserted and a touch screen for on-line check-in. It did not recognise my name or the booking number sent to me by Hotels.com. Tried phoning the help number given a couple of times but got the message that the number was not recognised. Pressed the emergency help button on the reception desk but it fell apart. I re-assembled it but no-one came when I pressed it. So found the main hotel number and spoke to someone who came down to reception. Was asked for a credit card as it was compulsory for them to reserve £20 for sundry expenses, despite me paying in full in advance by debit card. I was tired after a long drive and annoyed by this stage and couldn't correctly remember the pin for my credit card so said I would leave a £20 note, which they grudgingly accepted. Reached the room via a lift and a warren of corridors. It was cramped but adequate, with a view over a flat roof and a few minor defects in the shower room. In the morning tried to re-trace my route to the lift. Found that my key card would not open the fire doors, so I had to follow a fire exit sign that took me down some back stairs, along a corridor, down some more stairs, though the bar and eating area and eventually to reception 2 floors below. When I complained about this at reception I was told that this is intentional and that my room number did not have access to the corridor leading to the lift!! I collected my £20 note and left without enquiring about breakfast. I have stayed at 7 other hotels in the last month, including 2 by Best Western. All have been good or excellent, and this is the worst experience I have had in a hotel. I will never be returning an I would advise anyone else to avoid the Lothersdale.
