I took my nineteenth century american gold watch case to two companies; Lois Bullion and The Birmingham Gold Company. Lois Bullion insisted it was plated based on their "experts" inadequate knowledge of antique case markings but fortunately the Birmingham Gold Company properly tested it and found it was solid 13.2k (sadly not the 14k stamped). Even the winding stem was solid which is apparently rare. I accepted their offer, relieved that I got a second opinion from proper experts.
