I am specifically writing in response to an order I made last week for 2 pounds of gooseneck barnacles. They are a very rare - and delicious - type of seafood, and very expensive - with shipping included from Maine to anywhere in the US the cost totals $150. I had enjoyed this rare treat a few years ago back east, I believe it was from a different seafood importer. When I received the overnight shipment I did note that the vast majority of the individual barnacles were 1/4 to 1/8 inch in length...which was far shorter than the one to two inch barnacles that I'd had previously. After carefully cleaning them, blanching them (as instructed) and then removing the edible part from the shell we ended up with less than 4 ounces of seafood. That essentially works out to a net yield of $600 a pound. Based on my former experience with this item, and also looking at what was online for this dish, I felt...and still do...that 4 ounces was way too little for the price paid by at least a factor of 3 or 4 times what we had. At the least there should have been 8 to 12 ounces of meat, but what they were selling were almost exclusively barnacles that were all shell and barely any seafood. I called them up, expressed my unhappiness and I did ask if this was what they usually see from the product that they sell. They told me yes, it was, and I suggested that they really should mention this net yield in their advertising the product online. I was told that won't happen. Hence this very bad review. I'd give them no stars if I could.
