I have been a loyal Costco member for 12 years. I have always been pleased with the quality of their offering – until now. I used Costco Travel earlier this year and want to share that experience in hopes that it helps others. I booked an April trip to Paris and Amsterdam through Costco Travel. On the way to the airport, we began to get flight delay notices. By the time we got to the airport, the flight was delayed to the point that we would not make our connecting flight to Paris. We were supposed to leave Tuesday evening and arrive in Paris late Wednesday morning. Our only option was to take a flight to Chicago, spend the night, then fly to NYC, spend the night, and get to Paris on SATURDAY afternoon. We were scheduled to take the train to Amsterdam Sunday morning. We were not okay with missing the first leg of our vacation, so I spent 2 hours on the phone with Costco Travel trying to see if there was anything to be done. They were ZERO help. American Airlines was offering refunds, but because we didn’t book through the airline, they could not refund us. I called Costco back to tell them I was cancelling and was told the fee to cancel day of was $3000. I won’t go into how many phone calls and discussions we have had, but it has been 6 months since this happened, and we are still being told “we are waiting to see if the airline will refund the airfare”. The airline was willing to do the right thing, but Costco still has not. So my warning is this: Read all of the fine print before you sign up for a travel package with Costco and buy travel insurance. Otherwise, you will have no recourse if something goes wrong and will lose a lot of money like we did. I will definitely never book with Costco again.
