Downstairs at Back of Côte Royal Festival Hall

Staff were all very good and helpful. French onion soup tasty but it was what I would describe as a child's portion. Bowl so tiny that the 2 cheese-on-sourdough pieces had to be served laid across the rim of the bowl which, itself, sat on a small plate/saucer. These had to be removed to access the soup; one just about fitted on the side of the saucer, while the other had to sit on the table. Please, at least, provide a decent-sized plate under the soup on which to place the bread! It would also really cost Côte nothing to serve another ladleful of soup in a bigger bowl when the price is already around £9! Come on!The salmon bearnaise also had a good flavour and came with chips – a new potato option would be a nice touch – salmon is a bit too special to be treated as "fish n chips". The two small strands of tenderstem broccoli, though cooked in a good way, was a rather mean offering – did not amount to a decent vegetable portion. I paid extra for some French beans with flaked almonds. The main issue with the evening was lack of wifi or mobile signal. The waiter recommended I experiment with the wifi and select "forget Cote wifi" then retry. I did this 3 times, to no avail. My phone told me that perhaps "the router needs re-setting", not something I had control over. I sent a text message to the friend I was supposed to be meeting but he evidently did not get it, and I did not get his messages till later – when I discovered he had been waiting outside for 20-25 minutes. The waiter kindly got his name from me and ushered him in, but my friend was clearly browned off – all because of non-working tech. Okay, you can say we should have made our plans more specific in advance, or you could say we should not have relied on technology so much...The fact remains that the rear part of that restaurant is a communication dud-zone. Had I been seated in the front part of the restaurant, I would have been able to see my companion outside, and perhaps there the signals are better. But that did not happen.I would add that the tables are pretty close together, making private conversations pretty difficult.Good food, and the house white wine is very agreeable. But the overall experience was spoilt.
