Renters Beware!

I started this process with Cruise America in March, and the booking process went smooth. We decided to view one of the RV models that we were going to rent. It was a newer model in pristine condition. We felt very comfortable going forward. We made an appointment on Friday, July 25th early morning pickup and was advised the day before that the RV would not be ready until sometime Friday afternoon which was unacceptable. We agree to pick it up Saturday morning and were in a rush to get on the road. As we were loading the vehicle we realized it was not a newer model, not properly cleaned, and had other maintenance issues we had to deal with. When we finally settled down for the evening in 80+ degree weather, the A/C was not strong enough to cool the RV to a reasonable temperature. We called the 800 number to lodge a complaint and was advised to buy a fan to assist with the cooling. The following day, we camped in the Badlands, where the temperature was 90+ degrees and experienced the same problem with cooling. The next morning we started the vehicle and after 10 minutes, the RV overheated. We again called the 800# to report the problem and were told not to drive it and that they would send someone out to look at it. After about 3 hours of waiting, we called again and were advised they did not have anyone scheduled to come out and we should put water in the radiator reservoir then drive to a gas station for coolant. We ended up adding 1 gallon of water and 1 gallon of coolant. We drove 2 hours to a campsite and contacted them with the address and site number. We were told someone would come out to look at it as we were planning to be there for 3 nights. On the 3rd day, not hearing anything, we called the 800 # again. We were told they do NOT OFFER MOBILE SERVICE, contrary to what we were told previously!! Luckily we made it home all the while the check engine light was on. Fortunately, it did not ruin all of our vacation plans, as we were concerned and stressed out that we may not make it back in the rented RV to return it to the Plainfield, IL location. The representative gave us a partial refund which we did not feel was adequate for what we went through and was told that this was the best that he could do. We will NEVER rent from Cruise America again!
