It turned out that the item was discontinued and she was very patient and helpful in assisting me find a suitable and more suitable replacement. It is not the first time that previous purchased items (rechargeable ones) stopped working, but at least they lasted some time. UPDATE: The replacement item arrived in a timely manner, a couple days sooner than expected, via DHS and UPS.
