The Ryanair of car rental – avoid at all costsI rented a car for three days for a wedding in Berkeley. I had reserved a five-seater vehicle with space for three suitcases for £180. When we arrived at the check-in desk, we were told that the car would not fit five people and two suitcases, and that we’d need to pay for an upgrade. This “upgrade” cost an additional £170 — effectively doubling the total price. We were handed the keys and directed to pick up the car in a poorly lit parking area, where we didn’t notice any damage. We returned the car at the airport without any issues.A few days later, we received an email claiming that one of the tires was damaged and that we would be charged for a replacement. The alleged damage shown in the photos was extremely minor and could easily have been overlooked during a previous inspection (see attachment). We only used the car to drive to and from the airport, encountered no problems while driving, and did not cause any damage. The car was parked in a private parking spot at all times.I strongly advise against renting from Europcar. They will pressure you into costly upgrades or unnecessary insurance, and they’ll try to charge you for false damages.I travel frequently and usually rent from Hertz or Avis, but unfortunately made the mistake of choosing Europcar this time. Never again — stay far away from this awful company.
