CALLING FOR RECALL ON TORSION ASSIST HINGE

Purchased my second Featherlite 1610 in 2013. No issues with my first trailer. Second trailer was equipped with torsion assist hinge. This part is defectively designed and is no longer installed on Featherlite trailers. The torsion spring which is located on the passenger side of ramp door puts a great deal of stress on the weld mounts and they will separate from frame causing the door to buckle and not close. It also creates a safety issue. Once compromised the door becomes unstable. I called my dealer and several others and was told this is a wide spread issue. Featherlite's initial response was they no longer use this vendor and there's no part available to fix the problem. Featherlite no longer installs this part on their trailers so one can assume it is due to the issues. The door is designed specific for this part so the part can't be removed to accommodate my ramp door. I'm having the compromised welds repaired then plan on selling the trailer. I don't feel safe with this part on my trailer and won't take the chance of the problem reoccurring. My trailer is seldom used and clearly featherlike used an untested faulty part. Initially Featherlite said there was nothing they can do. Their exact response: That item is not considered part of the structural warranty, therefore it is only covered for one year.was: I pointed out to them that I spoke to several Featherlite technicians and was told this has been a wide spread issue with many customers. I also informed Featherlite that I will initiate a class action lawsuit to launch a nationwide recall for repair and or replacement so other owners aren't stuck with this defective part. When there's a recall in the auto industry the auto makers initiate the recall efforts. They don't pass the buck onto a former parts manufacture like Featherlite did with me. Featherlite's name is on my trailer. I purchased both my trailers from Featherlite not from the company that makes the defective torsion assist hinges. Since my initial contact with Featherlite they have soften their tone and have offered to install a cable assist option. This still doesn't correct the torsion assist part. This part needs to be removed from all trailers. A call was made to the company that manufactures the torsion assist hinge from a Featherlite dealer and he was told they have not fix to the issue. Ironically this Featherlite employee stated to me his trailer is equipped with the same option and his also failed. It's time to hold Featherlight responsible. I would hate to see someone's door fall off while traveling on the freeway. It's a safety issue and will be brought to the attention of the MNDOT as well as the DOT. If you have experienced the same issue and would like more info on our class action lawsuit feel free to call: 651-330-8216
