I’ve been with Gate City for over 5 years now and during that time they have made so many improvements. Originally, they used “popmoney” to send/receive money to/from other banks who use PopMoney-which weren’t many. Gate City consistently improves to best serve its customers and changed over to Zelle shortly after.
Another great feature, that isn’t promoted enough on their website, is their teen checking. My 16 year old was able to, with my assistance, open an account so she could have her paychecks direct deposited. She also is able to use Zelle. Since it’s a teen account, I can monitor her spending in the app. The one downside is that this teen account can also overdraft. We found this out when I transferred her money into her savings account by mistake. She used her card and it went
-$80. Thankfully, I instantly caught it and was able to get it corrected. So I am not sure if her account would have been charged the fees. One quick and easy call to the bank easily turns the overdraft feature off.
No matter what branch you go into, people are so friendly. They usually have a beverage and cookies available while you wait, which is never long.
They print your new debit card right there in the branch or through the drive thru. Usually it’s less than 5 minutes and you’re on your way with a new card.
They are always giving gifts out for new accounts. My daughter received a nice fleece like blanket and they even let me choose one of the gifts, even though I opened my account online.
The fees are about average for a national brand, in my opinion. There’s a $32 overdraft fee per transaction per day, up to 2 (I believe, don’t quote me). Overdrafts that are left after that incur an $8 negative balance fee. (Not sure how many days it charges while negative.) Again, a quick call to the bank will turn that overdraft feature off. There’s no monthly fees, which is nice. The account just can’t remain at $0.00 consecutively for 1 year or they’ll close it. As long as it has a penny in it, you’re good. I’m not sure what their other fees are.
To open an account (checking/savings) it’s just $50. Accounts do not have a minimum balance requirement, so the $50 isn’t permanent if you need it to use it now.
The only thing that could use some improvement is the app. The app feels sluggish compared to other banking apps and the layout feels old. Wells Fargo’s app allows you to do a lot with your account through the app and has a lot of important information you can access, compared to Gate City’s app that feels the actions and information for your account is extremely limited. The app could use an update and a new layout.
Overall, Gate City is a great place to bank. There’s numerous benefits to banking with them from the gift for opening a new account to no monthly fees. Teen checking is great because it functions as an adult account, all while you monitor from the app. Whether on the phone or in a branch, they are always friendly and happy to help.
