I know this is long, but please read my story.I want to start this review by acknowledging that the clinic as a whole seems wonderful. My experience with the OBGYN was truly outstanding—she exhibited an amazing bedside manner, was thoughtful and encouraging, and embodied all the qualities one would hope for in a guide through the IVF process. Similarly, the Patient Care Navigator assigned to us was a joy to work with and very prompt in communication. However, my experience with the financial coordinator was entirely different. From the beginning of this IVF process, I emphasized that finances were a significant concern for my family. While I was aware that our insurance plan did not cover IVF, I also knew that certain aspects of the process—such as genetic testing, medications, and diagnostic procedures—might be covered. I dedicated hours to researching my particular insurance plan. I investigated policies, learned medical necessities, CPT codes and diagnostic codes, and spoke with my insurance company so often I saved their number on my phone.Through all this effort, I discovered that with a prior authorization form, demonstrating medical necessity, there was a possibility that insurance might cover certain costs.I shared this information with the financial coordinator, expecting guidance and advocacy. Instead, she asked me to contact my insurance company and have them call her—a task that I felt was her responsibility. Despite my reservations, I complied. What followed was an excruciatingly uncomfortable three-way phone call where the financial coordinator repeatedly insisted, I didn’t have IVF coverage (a fact everyone on the call already knew). She dismissed my research, interrupted me as I tried to explain the policies I had found, and outright refused to submit the prior authorization form I had requested for the IVF process.I decided to try a different approach and asked for a prior authorization form be filled out for the genetic testing of my embryos. I attempted to share the relevant codes and policies I found. The financial advisor shut me down again, claiming that “IVF is a specialty” and that my research didn’t apply. She even accused me of asking my insurance representatives “the wrong questions.” Quite frankly, she made me feel like an idiot. This was particularly frustrating, given my background in the medical field and my efforts to thoroughly educate myself on the topic. The insurance representative on the call was clearly uncomfortable and eventually offered me a contact number for their maternal/fetal insurance specialists. I eagerly agreed to take the number, but the financial coordinator abruptly intervened. I was told “Do not write that number down! You do not have IVF coverage! If you call them were just going to be having this same conversation a couple weeks from now.” I felt like she had slapped me. I said “thank you” and hung up the phone.Fortunately, my story doesn’t end there. A few weeks later, I consulted with another clinic that provided an entirely different experience. They submitted the prior authorization form for genetic testing without hesitation, answered all my questions about CPT and diagnostic codes, reviewed the policies I shared, and treated me with kindness and respect. My insurance company APPROVED coverage for the equipment needed to test my embryos, saving me thousands of dollars. They even assured me they would submit a prior authorization form for the retrieval process when the time came, giving me hope for additional coverage.I recognize how fortunate I am to have received this approval, as I know this outcome is not guaranteed for everyone. The brief time I spent working with someone who clearly didn’t care about patients, or their financial burdens was gut-wrenching—it could have cost me thousands of dollars. The contrast between that experience and the compassion and effort shown by the clinic I am working with now, is stark. I am deeply grateful to now be working with a team that is willing to advocate for me and cares enough to try.
