Once upon a time, in a village of online shoppers, there came a piper dressed in brown and yellow, promising to lead their precious parcels through the winding streets to their very doorsteps. "Follow my tracking," he piped, and the people believed, watching their screens with hopeful hearts.
I was among the waiting. My parcel, a modest treasure, joined his procession. The piper's tune grew sweeter as he approached my street. "Delivered," sang the notes, a melody of completion, of success, of job well done. Yet when I opened my door, silence. No piper. No parcel. No footprints in the dust. My window glass, like a magic mirror, showed only empty cobblestones where the parade should have passed.
I ran to the piper's lodge to seek him out. The door stood locked, though the sign proclaimed "Open." I knocked. I called. I joined a queue of twenty-five other villagers, all seeking their missing treasures. The line stretched round the block, then dissolved into nothing, the piper's tune fading to dead air.
I sent messages by raven. No reply. I visited again during promised hours. The lodge remained sealed, other villagers huddled outside, shivering, clutching their tracking scrolls like talismans. Passports vanished en route to distant embassies. Christmas gifts circled in the piper's maze for weeks. Commercial goods sat overnight in the rain, unprotected, unloved.
The village children, had they been there, might have cried, "But he never played at your house!" Yet the piper kept his coin, kept his contract, kept piping his "delivered" tune to anyone who would listen. The mayor did nothing. The elders sent templates. The piper danced on.
I have since walled up my door against his approach, refusing any merchant who hires his services. The pied piper of GLS may lead parcels to the mountain, never to return. This villager prefers couriers who actually knock, who leave proof, who exist when the music stops.
The tune ends. The street stays empty. The piper keeps his gold.
