My health insurer dealt poorly with my proposed renewal (after about 30 continuous years with them), giving me a price then changing that figure, a 7-10 days review of which would have completely compromised my options. Unsatisfactory.
I responded to TV ads for iSelect and (mistakenly) assumed I would be given some alternatives. Instead, I was offered one, NIB. The sales-person was helpful but rapid-fire. I was not offered time to reflect upon it. I could have insisted, but in the face of the high pressure delivery and boxing-in of my position I was overwhelmed. Afterward, I wished that I had had the presence of mind to say “Whoa”, I’ll get back to you. I realised that you probably only offer a limited choice of insurers, but I felt that whoever picked up my enquiry and phoned me had only one outcome in mind, which may or may not have been what I would do with a proper free choice. I don’t doubt that effort was made to find me something better than my then insurer, but felt that it had been more (in the end, given that was paid up to end April with them - a free month that he said I would never get in reality from them) about his commission than my best interests.
This was on Fri 20 March.
I signed up. But what if I had broken a tooth the next day, on the weekend - or needed admission to hospital? I was told that the change would commence 20 March but I had no information about which providers NIB used and apart from a message to me, no evidence that I was a member.
This was unnerving.
