The whole purchasing amd usage experience was easy. We purchased our 7 day Japan Rail Pass early, well before our trip and it was sent via FedEx to our home. After arriving at Tokyo station we transferred it over and they give you a qr code ticket used to purchase tickets. For us it was well worth it. We home based in Tokyo and took day trips daily and ended up visiting Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima, Akita and Nara. Booking those separately on the shinkensen would have cost us way more. Also, in some cities it covered buses and light rail trains. It made getting around japan so much easier.
