Jerimani is a London-based textiles brand rooted in Southern African heritage and craftsmanship.
Jerimani finds its roots in transcendence, determination and uncompromising authenticity. The story begins in Harare: Thambo Mrewa (Lead Designer and Co-Founder), a mother of three, was tragically widowed. Needing to provide for her children, she took the advice of her aunt and enrolled in textiles college. What began as a means to survive quickly blossomed into a vocation: her artistry and attention to detail made her products so popular in markets across Johannesburg. Drawn by the popularity of her creations, Thambo moved her workshop to Johannesburg. Many years later, Byron Thomas (Co-Founder) encountered Thambo by chance, sending an array of her creations as gifts to friends across Europe. Having received a euphoric response to the beautiful designs and beautiful craftsmanship, Thambo and Byron formed a partnership. And Jerimani was born.
Each Jerimani product is uniquely handmade in Thambo’s central Johannesburg workshop by her skilled family team. We work exclusively with 100% cotton Shweshwe fabric, hand-selected from markets in Johannesburg and Harare. This iconic fabric is produced using acid discharge and copper-roller techniques, with patterns created through picotage—a precision pinning method rarely used today due to its complexity. The result is a depth of colour, detail and character that cannot be replicated by mass production.
Our design philosophy is anchored in the Southern African ideal of ubuntu—a belief in connection, harmony and community. Every colour, motif and stitch carries a story linking rural to urban, past to present, art to everyday life.
