I recently bought Johnstone's matt emulsion and also exterior gloss. The emulsion was a dusky pink to cover an existing pale pink. Edging/cutting in is a pain as it doesn't flow well. Too little, no coverage. A bit more and the wet line is over heavy and tends to sag. Even with very careful laying off, the edges needed two heavy coats. Considering the colours involved the coverage is pretty poor taking three coats to achieve a decent finish. The biggest hassle was constantly picking small lumps of paint off the wall, the roller and the tray. When opening new cans I always clean the neck of the can and the lid before pouring into a kettle or tray and use a drill mounted spinner to clean my rollers so am confident that neither work method or dirty tools were to blame.Moving on to the gloss, after the most careful preparation of my front door I noticed lots of small bubbles forming while painting that didn't clear completely even after laying off. Then the 'bits' started to appear. Same experience as when using the emulsion. Bits and more bits. Very frustrating when using gloss with a colour that shows every flaw. Assuming I had a poorly cleaned brush I binned it for another, brand new out of the packet. Still bits spoiling my work. In desperation went for a second new brush, same problem and could then see them on the brush as I picked up paint from the can. The 1 litre can had been stirred for at least 5 minutes because solids were coming up when lifting the stick. I stir paints clockwise, anticlockwise and side to side especially across the bottom of the can multiple times yet after using half the tin found it had a thick sludge at the bottom that couldn't be felt when stirring and was not picked up on the stirring stick. We have all made the classic error of cracking dried paint off the seal of a partly used can and it falling in but generally I have never had problems with other paints being lumpy or gritty. Over all, two maddening experiences that cost me a great deal of time to achieve a barely acceptable finish.
