I would have rated this a one-star experience if it weren't for the comedian portraying Smee, who was truly excellent and the standout of the performance. Without him, the show would have felt quite empty. I found it puzzling that they labeled this as Peter Pan, as there was little connection to the actual storyline. With only 20 cast members, the stage felt sparse. The sword fighting was minimal, appearing only in the final scene with just a few swings. While Alexandra Burke's singing was fantastic whenever she performed, I wished there had been more opportunities to hear her, especially since she was the main act!
I would have rated this experience lower if it weren't for the comedian portraying Smee, who was outstanding and truly the highlight of the show. Without him, it would have been quite lacking. I just watched half of the Peter Pan Pantomime, and unfortunately, it was the worst pantomime we've ever seen. There was no coherent storyline, no flow, and an odd talking monkey. Most of the performance felt like a puppet show. While one performer was impressive, her incredible voice was not utilized effectively. It's such a shame, as we've attended every year for as long as we can remember. We left at the interval because it was unbearable. The acting was poor, the costumes seemed outdated, and it felt excessively politically correct!
A trip to the theatre is always a delight, and the venue appears to be well managed. I’ve never encountered issues with the booking system or the actual visit. The staff are consistently professional, and given the high number of visitors each day, the place remains clean and tidy. My only minor complaint would be the seating, as it can feel a bit cramped, but that’s to be expected in such a historic building.
I attended Tina the Musical recently. The show was enjoyable, particularly in the second half, but it took a while to gain momentum. The supporting dancers were uncoordinated, and the acoustics were quite poor for a purpose-built theatre. The seating was uncomfortable, leaving me with significant back pain from limited movement. I don’t think I’ll be returning.
Every time I try to reach someone at the box office, nobody answers. I've waited over five minutes multiple times with no response. I had a similar experience a few months ago. The phone message is incredibly annoying; I would prefer just music instead of that voice urging me to become a member for the privilege of speaking to someone. The venue needs to show more consideration for its customers. Please answer the phone!
I attended Mary Poppins today, and it was an incredible show. My only complaint was that we were seated in the circle, where a group with special needs behind us made noise throughout the performance, which detracted from our enjoyment. I understand everyone wants to enjoy the show, but it might be better to seat such groups in the lower level or have designated performances for individuals with learning difficulties.
We have seen many performances at this venue over the years, and nearly all have been fantastic! We are fortunate to have such a wonderful place just 30 minutes from home, reducing our need to travel to larger cities. This year, we enjoyed Hamilton, which was breathtaking, and other great shows. We have more shows booked for later this year and next, and while the sound could occasionally improve, overall, it’s been superb. Life would be far duller without this venue. Just be mindful of your seating needs when booking.
