Very quick and informative response from Neils. Thank you.Neils was able to help us understand how our last name was derived from the geographical area name of Vendsyssel. For 60 years this has been a puzzle after my piano teacher (a Danish emigre named Hanson) told me that my last name was not a family name, but a geographical name in northern Denmark. There are still some loose ends to this question as the 1638 tax records in Oster Hassing list his name as Mads Thomasen Wendelboe. It is still uncertain how he took the family name of Wendelboe as a derivative of Vendsyssel.
