I think if you go to Harry Potter you’d expect to see magic stuff? Likewise we thought a play called Stereophonic, about a band, staged entirely in a music studio, would have, umm music!?! Any music is in pieces, with fits and starts. Much of the dialog is also punctuated with LONG pauses that are over used to the point the meaningful scenes lose poignancy if there was any. The first act of 1:45 min became tedious but we were SURE the second act would bring it all together- only to be hit with more meaningless dialog, pauses and loud over done arguments that added nothing. While the acting/lighting/characters are good none of it is enough to be invested in what happens in the end. It’s self indulgently long and hence ultimately shallow to the point where (this part of) the audience didn’t care anymore. With 15 minutes left we were simply yearning to hear a full song produced from this talented cast. Essentially this was a long tease with no payoff. I think we’d award this the most frustrating play instead of best. To us yhe writing/directing missed the opportunity to do something really cool. Close but a bit out of tune…
