I am leaving this review specifically about PayPal Credit, not PayPal as a whole.I have been a very long-term and otherwise very satisfied PayPal customer, and I would rate most of PayPal’s services 5/5. Unfortunately, my experience with PayPal Credit has been so poor that I feel a warning to other customers is necessary.I used PayPal Credit when purchasing an Apple product on an instalment plan. At checkout, the available providers were either another bank I did not already have an account with, or PayPal Credit. Because I had always trusted PayPal, I chose PayPal Credit, assuming it would be reliable and transparent. That assumption turned out to be wrong.Within just a few months, I experienced multiple issues: • On one occasion, two payments were taken in the same month instead of one. • Despite providing my bank details at the time of purchase (and PayPal already holding my payment details), a payment was missed due to PayPal’s own processing issue, without clear or timely notification. • I was then charged a missed payment fee, contacted by PayPal and asked to call them, only to be told during the call that the issue would be corrected and no charge applied. • Despite this reassurance, the amount was later added back onto my balance, increasing my instalments by £12 without clear explanation. • After several calls, I was told this was “one-off” and would be corrected — yet the amount was still taken overall, leaving me uncertain whether it had also affected my credit reporting. What makes this particularly concerning is the lack of transparency and documentation: • I was never provided with a clear, formal credit agreement or instalment plan showing total cost, interest, and monthly breakdown. • The balance shown for the product purchase does not clearly match the PayPal Credit balance, and there is no clear explanation or breakdown to reconcile the difference. • If I needed to dispute this or go to the ombudsman, I would struggle to evidence what was actually agreed, because the information simply isn’t clearly recorded or accessible.Overall, PayPal Credit feels poorly designed, poorly documented, and poorly supported, especially compared to other PayPal services. The customer service experience was also disappointing, with explanations that were unclear and at times dismissive.Had I known this in advance, I would have used an alternative provider, which I have found far more transparent and reliable.Until PayPal significantly improves PayPal Credit, I would strongly advise customers to avoid it, if there is an alternative.
