I'm Fabrizio, Francesco’s father, who had a two months volunteer experience in Kenya. Francesco has returned home after spending two months in Kenya with Projects Abroad. He took part in the environmental conservation project at the Soysambu reserve and then in the child care project in Nanyuki. According to him, both experiences were wonderful and very different from each other. The one that left the strongest impression on him was the work with the children, he had a lot of fun with them during school hours, playing math games and doing lots of drawings. He came back home with an endless number of notes and drawings, which are now hanging on his bedroom wall. What stayed with him the most are the children’s smiles. At the end of the school term, he also took part in classroom renovation activities. He didn’t miss out on anything, including two safaris and several excursions.Francesco went to Kenya because he needed a major change in his life. He’s only 17, but he left school because he kept having anxiety attacks every time he entered the classroom and couldn’t handle oral tests or written exams. The Italian school system is one of the most stressful in the world for teenagers, and at the same time, it has never been modernized, it’s still the same as it was in my day, and I’m 56. I don’t understand why the Italian school system hasn’t adapted to modern society. When he came back, after just two months, I saw a new Francesco: motivated, eager to take initiative, and ready to engage with the working world. I always hope that one day he’ll go back to studying, but I don’t know if that will ever happen.Francesco will definitely set off for another experience at the beginning of next year, and I believe it will be with Projects Abroad again. He met many people, both from Projects Abroad staff and among the volunteers and locals, from whom he learned a great deal. He’s realized that he’s genuinely interested in helping others.
