Luggage never arrived, having hardly any of the mandated kit list, everyone on this trip helped, offering spare clothing (Simon and Maria you totally saved us lending us your spare bike shorts! To Jim and team lending head torches, waterproofs and much more!). It’s hard to put in words the Rat Race Guatemala experience. From our local passionate team spearheaded by Lusia who imparted so much history, anecdotes and knowledge to the elfly nimble James Appleton who navigated us back on track on the final days climb and especially to the strong, humbling people we lived with 24/7 completing the race, I loved it all. Seeing the country in this way provides such a unique experience. The people of Guatemala from the elderly to the youngest child were incredibly warm and welcoming. The landscape! Breathtakingly beautiful. From the cane fields, jungle and cobblestoned tracks - yes, even the cobblestoned tracks - to dormant and active volcanoes, lakes and single track crazy bike climbs, Rat Race is physically and mentally challenging and not for the faint hearted. But when you stand on top of the highest volcano in Central America with everyone making that climb the emotion is raw…..tears, laughter…. It’s all shared, appreciated and humbling.
