Received what looked like an official business name renewal notice from Registry Australia. The letter was designed to look like a government communication, but this company has nothing to do with ASIC — they are a private third party.
They charge $99 for a 1-year renewal and $199 for 3 years. ASIC charges $40 for 1 year and $88 for 3 years directly at asic.gov.au. That's more than double the price for the exact same outcome.
I caught it before paying, but I can see how many small business owners — especially those who aren't tech-savvy — would pay this without questioning it.
If you receive a renewal letter, go directly to asic.gov.au and renew there. Don't pay a third party nearly double for something you can do yourself in five minutes.
