I hired Resume Pilots specifically because I wanted to effect a carefully-timed, slight career shift and hoped that an expert outside perspective would help make it a smooth transition. I believed the hospitality expertise that the company highlights would be a critical component to their ability to help make my case. I’ve not hired a resume writer in the past. While the process helped me strengthen the presentation of some of my accomplishments and think about how to amp up my LinkedIn page, my assigned writer did not seem to know the hospitality industry and associated lingo. Despite the requested front-end paperwork, they put focus on career experience that wasn’t relevant to the target jobs I was asked to provide or career path we discussed. I ended up providing substantial redline edits in response. After a few couple of drafts, I wrapped the process before I felt the documents were as polished as they could be, because I was treating them more like a copy editor. I started my job search putting trust in the product despite my misgivings and met swift and uniform rejection, which is unusual for me. Once I entirely rewrote the formulaic cover letter and made a few significant modifications to my resume, responses immediately changed for the better. I am now considering rewriting my documents entirely because my work experience still doesn’t seem to register in advance to interviewers. I followed the process more than my gut told me to do, because I wanted to believe I was paying to work with people who knew the tips and tricks for applications, career changes, and translating my industry experience better than I. Not sure now. If you are someone who struggles with presentations or writing, this is a great service for you. But if resume writing has been one of your strong suits in the past, you may be better off going it alone and forgoing the hefty fee and long process.
