I just completed the Arizona Defensive Driving Course, and while I appreciate the intent behind promoting safer driving, this course feels like it was written decades ago and never meaningfully updated.Much of the material is hopelessly outdated — filled with instructions on how to disassemble your vehicle to inspect wiring harnesses, check fuses, and replace bulbs manually. These are skills that the average driver (especially those operating modern vehicles, hybrids, or EVs) neither needs nor can safely perform. I drive an EV, and much of the “maintenance” section was simply irrelevant to the technology in use today.Worse, the course contradicts itself frequently — particularly on topics like ABS braking distances — and even includes factually incorrect statements. Some modules contain information that’s not just obsolete, but misleading or wrong by current safety standards. The tests seem designed as word games rather than comprehension checks, full of tricky phrasing that punishes careful readers rather than reinforcing safe driving habits. In short, this course fails its purpose. Instead of promoting defensive driving awareness, it forces students to memorize and repeat incorrect or outdated content under the pretense of safety education. A modernized, evidence-based rewrite is long overdue.
