For Christmas this year, my seven-month pregnant fiancé, Anne, (Danish) and I (American) were traveling from the United States to spend the holidays with her family in Odense, Fyn. Because of work-related issues, I was traveling from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and she was traveling from Orlando, Florida. Our plan was to meet in Washington DC Dulles International Airport on December 21st to take SAS flight SK 926 to Copenhagen. Unfortunately, due to the gross negligence on the part of United airlines and inexcusable, non-weather related delays, Anne's flight was delayed for hours and it seemed certain that she would miss our flight to Denmark. Making matters even worse, there were no available SAS flights for the next two days from Dulles to Copenhagen and I was not going to leave her alone in an airport for Christmas. The SAS flight to Copenhagen began boarding and was nearing the time when the gates would close when Anne's flight landed at a terminal 20 minutes walking distance away. After brief deliberation, I boarded the plane as the flight attendants were making final preparations and explained my situation with urgency but no expectation. Despite the plane being ready for takeoff but knowing they could make the lost time up in the air on our way to Copenhagen, the crew incredibly held the plane up for 25 minutes past closing time in order to allow Anne to reach the gate. We had never witnessed or felt such generosity and compassion from an airline crew in all our travels throughout the world and wanted to thank SAS and the crew of flight SK 926 for making our Christmas very special and giving us a story that we'll never forget!
