I have two loans (one postgrad) and I started paying my postgrad back as soon as I left my course, nearly a year ago. I have moved jobs and now earn above the threshold for both loans. The HMRC were very organised and sorted both my tax code and SLC payments automatically and I have been paying back both loans for two months at nearly £100/month for both - this is all fair enough. However, I have suddenly started to receive letters and emails saying I need to start paying the loans back. Talk about angst inducing. The reason it worries me so much is that when I started paying back they demanded a lump sum payment due to me finishing my postgrad early (mastered out of a PhD). I actually didn’t finish sufficiently early to trigger this as I was writing up my thesis even though I was no longer actively researching. They wanted thousands up-front. Sorting this was a nightmare at a horrible time in my life and no one knew what they were doing. The phone calls ended with me knowing nothing and eventually I received a statement that looked about right some weeks later with no explanation or reassurance. They will try it on if they can get away with it, so please do question them if something seems wrong. It might just be incompetence but whatever it is, it caused and is causing me, a repaying customer, worry that I do not need.
