I have been trying to learn Mandarin for
Ten years. My son is married to a charming Chinese girl. I began with a textbook similar to one used in secondary schools to teach children a language.
It was okay but I was having to learn lists of vocabulary which I could do easily but sentence construction was tricky. So there was no mastery of Mandarin. Three years ago, i began subscribing to the popular online language programme. I have been enjoying this, but Iam not in control of my learning - and cannot go back to fill in gaps.
I saw adverts for Echo on Youtube and I was intrigued.
The talk of a different style style of learning interested me. To buy the core programme was a very reasonable price, so I did.
I am so glad I did!
I am up to lesson 6. I am in control of my learning I can fast forward, rewind, repeat.
Adam Wang has found the missing link for me. He is right. Adults learn in a different way because we have so much more background and basis to language with our formed brains than children do with their developing brains.
Brilliant.
Just one problem, have to limit myself as to how long I spend doing it - otherwise, housework and other things aren't being done!
My three year old Chinese granddaughter is coming to visit me in June. I think she will be very surprised at how well her English grandmother can communicate with her!
