While the pasties from the Cornish Bakery in Hereford and Gloucester are good, today’s experience in Hereford has cast doubt in our minds about ever buying your sweet pastries again. My wife and I enjoy French Almond Croissants made with real almonds, almond paste, marzipan and almond essence and light flaky pastry. On walking past your shop I saw numerous pastries which had just been baked. I asked if they were almond croissants, as they looked very appealing, and was assured they were and I bought one. At £3.80 each I had high expectations. The two girls behind the counter were very pleasant, friendly and obliging, warning me that it was very hot. Sadly this was not an almond croissant as we know it. When cooled sufficiently to eat, it was a soggy pastry case with an unknown variety of jam in it, There was an initial hint of almond flavouring, and a few sliced almonds on the surface gave the appearance of the genuine article. Most of all the main flavour was really unpleasant, being metallic or as my wife suggested, fishy. We both found it frankly very unpalatable. It has left a lasting taint in my mouth and palate which has not gone after 6 hours, and a meal. It might be the excessive raising agent used, or contaminating oil or fat. I would be interested to know the actual ingredients if they are available. I initially did not want to write a negative review as it reflects badly on the staff who were working hard. The food displayed reflected pride in their work and could not be faulted. However a phone call to discuss this with the manager, in mid afternoon, was not successful. I would be grateful for a reply addressing my concerns, from the head office. Thank you.
