Booked a champagne afternoon tea with ease on the website. Rescheduled with ease additionally. Arrived via the side door and was greated by the friendliest of doorman. Our table was by the waiters service area and boarded a walkway which was a shame. It felt a tad like being near a service area in IKEA. The essence of being at the Ritz was missed to some extent. The waiters were very friendly and polite. Our waiter had a very thick accent which made it difficult to understand what was being said above the background noise. I felt a little embarrassed having to ask them to repeat information. Loved the piano playing, thank you Mr Pianist. The selection of sandwiches were plentiful. Our allergen was taken into account. If I'm going to be picky the bread was a tad dry. The scones were warm and tasty and the small cakes were eye catching. We couldn't overly make out the flavour of two of the cakes but that was fine. My friend asked for coffee with oat milk and this arrived. It was lukewarm but drinkable. I asked for a hot skimmed milk and received a hot oat milk. Not something I drink and luckily no allergy. We were offered extra sandwiches, tea and cake. I couldn't tell you if there was an extra charge for this but it's something I'd check if you're watching your pennies or you don't want a surprise bill if theres a charge. There was a sitting after ours and we felt rushed to eat and go if I'm honest. Our waiter brought out a small birthday cake to celebrate our birthdays. Beautiful touch and a wonderful experience so thank you There is a discretionary service charge that wasn't pointed out to us but we paid this. Sadly we were charged £50 for two glasses of champagne, even though we had booked a champagne afternoon tea. The Ritz have said that we drunk the higher price champagne and should have read this. I say, at no point were we told this or directed to the menu. We were offered three types of champagne when asked if we were having a champagne afternoon tea and was not told the champagne we were offered was higher priced. If you're booked for a champagne afternoon sadly my advice would be check that you have been given the champagne for the price you've paid otherwise you may be unknowingly surprised. I wouldn't go back to the Ritz. Aqua Shard would be my go to, great communication, service, food and no surprises.
