Whatever Gulf & Fraser Fishermen’s Credit Union once was, it’s gone. Buried somewhere under mergers, policies, and a mountain of corporate cronies who send out lower-level staff to absorb the fallout from angry members, many of whom supported them for years.
They sold the image of a supportive, community-driven credit union back when they were just a drop in an ocean of banks. But somewhere along the way, that promise turned into a hook pulling people into a system that now feels more like a cold, stagnant pool of bureaucracy instead of the living, breathing community they once were.
With an inability to return calls, answers that go nowhere, and the warmth of a sandworm, it seems they’d rather protect policy than serve the very people who built them.
Plenty of financial institutions get flak for poor communication, but when those same failures are fused into the larger machine they now call BEEM, it becomes something worse. When a system can’t execute basic requests in a reasonable time—when it can’t even pay what’s owed when asked, that’s not just poor service. That’s institutional incompetence.
I would say the inmates are running the asylum, but that would be insulting to the inmates at least madness has a kind of logic.
My advice to anyone still with BEEM: consider moving your accounts. You may not get the same interest rates elsewhere, and a bank may give you a colder stare but at least you’ll know where you stand. A real credit union should have a heart, and even with all their flaws, banks will at least deal with you directly and not hide behind layers of policy and pass responsibility down the chain.
To the few staff who did not act like a soulless machine at what is now a lost version of Fisherman’s Credit Union, and who treated people with care, I wish you the best. My frustration isn’t with you, but with the system that’s driving people to leave what used to be something better.
