First and foremost I MUST stress that Tumblr can, and has, been an incredible place where you can meet people who share your interests, are fun to talk with, and be supportive of you.
It's just a shame that this can also mean you'll often be expected to think exactly like everyone else, fight on one side of the Social Justice War, condemn an entire group, reblog controversial posts, and not go against the grain of popular opinion.
I really, REALLY wish this wasn't the case.. it most certainly wasn't about 3-4 years ago when I first started using Tumblr actively, but that is without a doubt the state that it has devolved into. There is so much blind hatred for CIS, feminists, gamers, homosexuals, bisexuals, men, women, Steven Moffat, and so forth with no marked boundaries so all of these and more will constantly overlap.
You may be friends with someone who loves cats and the Power Puff Girls only to discover some days (or months) down the road they're also men's rights activists who think women are destroying video games. You may have been mutuals with somebody, spent time voice chatting with them, only to learn they think all white people (themselves included??) are scum who only make the world worse.
I've had to touch and feel along the ground the last couple years to find as many of the little boundaries on what I can or can't discuss without having someone fly off the handle about it. I've been accused of both being overly sensitive AND highly offensive.. because I think you don't need to be white to be racist towards someone.
I love spending time with my friends and discussing video games or various television and cartoon shows. I greatly enjoy seeing cat pictures show up on my dashboard. I just wish that the positive experiences outweighed the negative ones.. but they don't, and I've come close to leaving Tumblr entirely multiple times.. it's just that I don't have any idea where I'd go, especially since the friends who I DO really like to talk to aren't likely to go anywhere else.
