Today I decided to see what would happen if I accept TrustPilot's suggestion to verify my identity. After scanning a QR code, I was prompted for access to my camera to scan my Drivers License. I paused here to spend 5 minutes to make sure Veriff was safe before proceeding. I found trustpilot reviews, mostly people complaining about it not working, and getting no support. I noted the irony of TrustPilot using Veriff.com to put a Verified badge on their users profiles, while Veriff has a TERRIBLE TrustPilot rating. (Veriff is rated *1.7* / 5 with 151 reviews, as of 3/27/25)Beyond the low Trustpilot score, the site and owners seem trustworthy from my brief research. With expectations for support and functionality appropriately lowered, and accepting that all my personal info is probably already for sale on the dark-web anyway, I proceeded with granting access to my camera and getting out my Driver's License. The whole process took maybe 60 seconds and by the time it was done, I was already marked Verified on my TrustPilot profile. After granting access to my camera, it just wants three pictures: The front of my driver's license, the back of my driver's license, and a well lit selfie. (I did the drivers license against a dark background, and the selfie with a white background just to make sure it'd work, but it didn't specify.) The hardest part was scanning the bar-code on the back: In the app it looks like it wants you to zoom in on just the code, but I had to center the entire driver's license in the constraining box and then the camera was able to focus and the app confirmed the barcode. For myself at least, it was super easy, and seemingly safe: Their data retention and privacy policies are easily findable and appear fair. They're a Y-Combinator backed Estonian startup launched by a farmer kid after his experience trying to buy supplies from a vendor -- he was surprised how easy it was to trick Paypal into verifying he was 18 while he was still under-age, so he decided to build a better verification tool. Not a bad story, and now they're the most famous startup in Estonia, and a $1B Unicorn. 5-stars, Kaarel Kotkas, keep it up.
