As I write this I’m enjoying a cup of masala chai, a refreshing Indian tea that is bringing back great memories of the birding and cultural adventure I had in India hosted by Mowgli Expeditions. We birded the western Ghat areas south of Mumbai near the small town of Dandeli. This area was loaded with a great many birds, most of which were lifers for me. The lodge at Old Magazine House was well maintained. Food was good with a wide variety of Indian dishes. Next, we headed to Bangalore and enjoyed two days in a jungle lodge near the town of Kabini. On jeep safaris we were rewarded with tigers, leopards, and wild dogs. After the birding I travelled to the north to partake of some of the cultural aspects of India around the busy town of Udaipur. A large palace complex was the central attraction along with a unique Hindu shrine near by. A trip to the small village of Bera afforded a chance to stay a couple nights at a palace with several rooms remodeled for tourists. The highlights of this area are the many koppies (rocky hills) with chances to see the leopards found here. Yes, we saw several.Next, we spent a day exploring the amazing Taj Mahal.Final day was spent birding the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. Highlight was a chance to see a pair of Sarus Cranes. The trip included expert local guides at all locations. Sachin, the owner of Mowgli, was with us and providing all the necessary logistical support needed.
