I have been a regular weekly customer for many years at Grantham Aldi, and have always found staff to be polite, friendly, and professional. Unfortunately, my experience today fell far below the standards I would expect from Aldi when visiting on 09/10/25I was shopping with my 80-year-old mother-in-law, who was unloading her trolley at the checkout. The cashier, whom I did not recognise as a regular member of staff, was completing a transaction for another customer. Once my mother-in-law had unloaded all her shopping, the cashier looked at me and said that checkout 6 was free. I explained that we were together and that I was happy to wait behind her. Without saying anything further, the cashier turned off her checkout light to red, stood up, and walked away—leaving my mother-in-law’s groceries on the belt. This was completely unacceptable and left us both confused and embarrassed. Another member of staff at checkout 1 noticed what had happened, confirmed that the cashier was aware we had already unloaded, and kindly reopened the checkout for us. The same cashier then returned, sat down, and began scanning my mother-in-law’s items with clear hostility—flinging them down the collection area with no care, no eye contact, and no basic courtesy. The same behaviour continued when scanning my own shopping. The manner in which we were treated was rude, unprofessional, and entirely inappropriate, particularly towards an elderly customer. I expect Aldi staff to uphold a level of respect and customer care that reflects their company’s values, and this experience was far from that.I tried to lodge a complaint over the Aldi website and the response was also poor.
