I signed up for AlterMe and paid $32.57 for what was presented to me as a DNA test. After deciding the program was not a good fit, I contacted support within the 30-day window to request a return. That’s when I was informed that the “DNA+” service is actually an $899 lab service that continues to be charged monthly until paid in full — even if you return the ring and cancel the program. At no point during checkout did I understand that I was committing to an $899 financial obligation. I paid $32.57. I did not knowingly agree to finance an $899 test. When I asked how $899 could be deducted from a refund when I hadn’t paid that amount, I was told that I would continue to be charged monthly until it was paid off — or I could pay the $899 in full. This was not clearly explained in a way that a reasonable customer would understand they were entering into an $899 obligation. If you are considering this program, read every line carefully and understand that what appears to be a low upfront DNA test fee may actually be an $899 commitment.Very disappointing experience.
