The Famous AE Customer Service Was a No-Show

My son-in-law and daughter both carry the American Express Platinum and have been suggesting that I apply for it as well. Since AE's initial spend requirement is high ($8000 within 6 months) in order to get the bonus miles, I didn't think I would be able to meet the requirements to qualify. However, recently I needed to buy a new car. Since I could pay a certain amount by credit card, I could almost meet the AE $8,000 requirement. My son-in-law sent me the link to apply for the Platinum - allowing him both to get a referral bonus and for me to get a 175,000 miles bonus. I was on the road, trying to multitask, working off my phone instead of the much preferred computer for this kind of work. I thought I was applying via the link but somehow, the application went direct to AE website. So instead of getting 175,000 bonus miles, I got 125,000.I immediately called AE as soon as I realized what had happened but ... alas, the much vaunted AE Customer Experience was nowhere to be found. Nothing a big, global corporation can do about the 50,000 bonus miles. No possible way AE could come up with any other solution to make up for the 50,000 miles. A credit statement? Deducting the dollar value of the 50,000 miles from the annual fee ($695)? I also let my son know that I was applying for the Platinum so the whole family could use some of the AE perks together. He applied and got 150,000 miles bonus. I got 125,000, even though I referred him, and my son-in-law got 0 for referring me. In about 30 minutes, AE got 2 instantly approved customers. Not a bad day's work ... and it wasn't even their sales/marketing dept that did any work."Once they have you as a customer, they don't care" seems to be on point. But AE seems to forget that after the first year of using the benefits I paid for, I can always cancel. So what if my credit score takes a temporary hit ... it's high enough to withstand it. The search for a card with the level of customer service their marketing materials boast continues.
