Terrible experience with gift card returns

This has been an awful experience with gift card returns. My pregnant wife lost £500 during the Christmas season while trying to find a suitable maternity dress, which is difficult to assess online. The customer support team consistently refuses to assist us. Automatically opting for a gift card return instead of a refund to the original account feels like a blatant disregard for consumer rights.
