Frustrating exchange process

I ordered a hat for my husband for Christmas after seeing their holiday advertising. Unfortunately, the hat was too small, and when I requested an exchange after opening it on Christmas, the company denied my request after several emails. They stated my order was placed too early and outside their exchange window. While I understand the policies, I would have appreciated some flexibility since I was not looking to return it but simply to exchange it. Researching policies for different merchants can be challenging during the holidays, and it seems the company is unwilling to accommodate future customers.
