My teacher was banned from Cambly without notice. I didn’t even get to say goodbye and I’ve been with this teacher for over a year. This sucks! Cambly always raises their subscription fee and then bans your favourite teacher. Now i have to find another teacher but it won’t be with Cambly! Don’t waste your time signing up to learn here.
This company is total BS! They deactivated the best tutor, claiming it was to improve customer satisfaction, but my satisfaction with the company has completely vanished. The tutor was incredibly experienced and knowledgeable, providing valuable insights in each session. It seems the company prioritizes its own interests over customer needs. If you want to practice speaking English, it's better to use apps that won't impact your morale.
This company is paying under the minimum wage in many countries for example the UK. It should be forced to pay a decent wage. Recently they told me they were reporting my income to my country of residence - good - I pay tax anyways. The problem is they way they have done it takes my hourly rate below the legal minimum. We are defenceless against these people. They could be shut down if they don't report income for tax but who gives a monkeys if we are paid peanuts.
Tutors BewareI've been working with Cambly for a while now, and I feel compelled to share my experience in the hopes that it will help others make an informed decision. Unfortunately, my time with Cambly has been far from positive, and I want to highlight a few key issues that potential tutors should be aware of.1. Poor Treatment of Tutors:Cambly markets itself as a flexible and rewarding platform for tutors, but the reality is quite different. The company treats its tutors as expendable, offering little to no support when issues arise. Whether it’s dealing with unfair student reviews or technical problems, don’t expect much help from Cambly’s support team. The responses are often generic, delayed, or completely unhelpful. This lack of support leaves tutors feeling isolated and undervalued.2. Unfair Rating System:The rating system on Cambly is incredibly stressful. Tutors are constantly under pressure to maintain high ratings, but the system is flawed and lacks transparency. A single bad review can drag your overall rating down significantly, and there’s no clear recourse to challenge unfair ratings. This creates a toxic environment where tutors are left feeling anxious and insecure about their standing on the platform.3. Low Pay:Considering the amount of money Cambly makes from its students, the pay for tutors is shockingly low. Tutors are paid by the minute, which sounds decent on paper, but in practice, it’s far from fair. The rates do not reflect the effort, preparation, or emotional labor that goes into teaching. Meanwhile, Cambly is charging students significantly more, pocketing a large profit while paying its tutors a fraction of what they’re worth.4. Lack of Job Security:There’s no real job security with Cambly. Tutors can be penalized or even removed from the platform with little explanation. This lack of stability is incredibly stressful, especially for those who rely on Cambly as a primary source of income. Conclusion:If you’re considering working for Cambly, I strongly urge you to think twice. The poor treatment of tutors, combined with a flawed rating system, low pay, and lack of support, makes it a very challenging and often demoralizing place to work. Cambly’s business model seems to prioritize profit over the well-being of its tutors, and that’s something I can no longer support.
This company is the worst! It has a toxic work environment, unfair low pay, and engages in unfair business practices. The list goes on and on. If it were possible to give less than a one-star review, I would. This company takes at least two-thirds of what the student pays. The company has blocked teachers from certain states where the minimum wage is more than what they pay. As minimum wage has risen everywhere, Cambly refuses to give a raise. I've worked in some of the worst environments in the world, and Cambly is by far the worst. Additionally, I believe that Congress should investigate the company due to numerous negative reviews by tutors and students worldwide.
The company takes at least two thirds of what the student pays. Practically zero support from higherups. Marketed to students as a place to meet with professional teachers, marketed to teachers as a place to get paid for conversation like a sex worker, and the difference teachers learn in trial by fire, four-star ratings ruining your profile. If you are a woman, men students will certainly expose themselves, and support most likely will do nothing. They have blocked teachers from certain states whose minimum wage is more than what they pay, because as minimum wage has risen literally everywhere, for Cambly a raise will never happen. I've worked in some of the crumbiest environments there are in the world, and cambly is by far the worst.
I've dedicated over 4 years to Cambly, and the only thing keeping me going is my wonderful regular students.Well, my students and the fact that burnout is a REAL problem. I'm always too tired and unmotivated to move on. It's a horrible vicious circle. But let me tell you, this company is a disgrace.Pathetic CompensationCambly pays a pittance at $10.20 per hour, it's a slap in the face. And that's $10.20 only IF you teach for 60 minutes. They compensate by the minute which is currently $0.17. A little more for teaching kids classes.Tutors are left with a meagre $1.70 to $2 for no-shows and late cancellations. We get no benefits—no healthcare, no pension, no sick pay, nothing. This is exploitation, pure and simple.Outrageous Terms of AgreementTheir new Terms of Agreement are downright criminal. We have to allow them to use our lessons for development and improvements. Basically, we're agreeing to them using us to train AI tutors that will make us jobless. Dystopia at its finest! They’re squeezing every last penny out of their students while treating tutors like disposable slaves. This is a scummy company that treats its tutors like dirt. Burnout is real and it's affecting so many online tutors, especially with the way we have to do things here at Cambly.Gig work, online side hustle, whatever you want to call it, this is a twisted, messed up way to go about modern-day work.If you value your mental health and your time, find something else. It is easy to get stuck working for Cambly because you'll be too tired and burned out to learn a new skill or find another job. PLEASE, DO NOT WORK FOR THIS COMPANY.
Like many tutors have mentioned and the most important thing - the pay is LOW. We are getting paid way below minimum wage, they do “bonus” schemes which really don’t benefit us, we have to work many many hours before we can even receive a decent bonus. It’s not a bonus it’s an incentive and a way to keep students coming back for more and paying the company money. Oh Cambly like to increase their prices for students but where does that money go?? Definitely not towards increasing tutors’ pay. It’s so disheartening and disrespectful because this could be a good job where tutors would be happy which would enrich the students’ experience… however, it’s the most mentally exhausting job especially knowing the company cares so little about you.
