I used to use Cloud Research with success, and made a decent amount of money from it. In my experience, they did pay, and at the time, it went well. I liked the previous system of being able to choose to upload your ID or not -- it was made clear that by declining to upload your ID, you may be missing out on certain opportunities, but it was never mandatory. I am fine with that -- I am absolutely not comfortable with forking over my ID, and I am okay with taking a small penalty for that. I recently attempted to return to this site, and it seems that they have now made ID checks mandatory. This is an unacceptable invasion of privacy and, at least to me, makes the site unusable. If everyone would refuse to do it, they wouldn't be able to enforce this. Yes, using this service is optional. Fortunately, many competitors aren't such sticklers for invading the privacy of the people they're already using for their own gain. I am intimately familiar with academic research. The risk of participants being dishonest can be accounted for without forcing those participants to hand their personal information over to a website that is no less vulnerable to a security breach than any other.
