A curate's egg of a charter. The base team did their best, but were badly restricted by penny-pinching further up the chain I feel. The boat, a Dufour 36, had a seaworthy hull, a reliable and economic engine, and a good galley and heads. The biggest problem was a cracked capshroud bottle screw, a major safety failing that should have been spotted during an inspection. We had to return to base for replacement which cost us a good day of our holiday. (It was admitted that this was not our fault.) The second issue was the self-tacking foresail. These are hard to furl neatly in a flat calm and impossible in any wind. Unfortunately the top turns blew out and destroyed the sail, costing us our large insurance excess. (Not taking out extra extra cover is a mistake I have not made before and won't make again.) Other annoying defects included: - unreliable chart plotter (kept locking up & needed rebooting) - unreliable depth sounder seeing shallows- rudder lock inoperative
