My experience is similar to the report by N.T. dated 1/11/25. Having contracted for a fixed tariff a few months ago I received two emails, one for electricity and one for gas, to say that "At your request" I was being moved to the more expensive variable green tariff. I thought my account must have been accessed by hackers. I phoned the company to be told that this was because I had not had smart meters fitted within 90 days of joining. I said that no-one had told me that this was required by the contract. The agent I spoke to did not challenge me on this point. I agreed to make an appointment to have smart meters fitted and the appointment was made and acknowledged by the fitters. The following day I had another email from Ecotricity threatening that I would be moved to the green tariff if I didn't make an appointment to have smart meters within 7 days and would be charged £75 leaving fee for each fuel, even though I had not requested to leave. I have emailed the company twice but received no reply. I have reviewed all the correspondence including the link to terms and conditions prior to moving to Ecotricity and can find no mention of a requirement to fit smart meters. Like N.T. I have had requests from a third party company to fit smart meters and have ignored these because I had no knowledge of the company concerned. I consider that Ecotricity is using bullying tactics.
