Due to a mistake made in forwarding mail to a new address and invoices not reaching us, one of our homeowner's policies with Erie lapsed. When we discovered the problem, Erie refused to reinstate or rewrite the policy, which was one of five policies we had with them at the time, some going back 45 years! The local agent's recommendation was for Erie to use a third-party broker and quoted a price of $4,800 per year vs. the previous price of less than $700. The issue was elevated to a representative of the Erie Office of the President, who only would state their policies and boilerplate. When asked if they were willing to throw away a good customer of 45 years the answer was simply and sadly, yes! Very short-sighted. In order to obtain the best quotes from Erie competitors, we had to bundle all our insurance needs for competitive bidding. The competitive quote for the one policy that lapsed, was $1500 vs. the Erie solution of $4,800. As a retired business executive myself, it is hard to believe that a company would walk away from a customer of 45 years. Perhaps I should have shopped our business years ago!
