Shocking Experience with Europ Assistance – January 2026

I’ve been traveling around the world for several years and have had Europ Assistance coverage since 2022. Everything seemed fine… until I actually needed them.

In January 2026, I experienced two “thunderclap headaches” in a single day, followed by symptoms suggesting a possible stroke or aneurysm. Before going to the emergency room in Florida, I called Europ Assistance to confirm coverage and the procedure. I was given approval to go.

At the hospital, I was diagnosed with a 1 mm aneurysm. I had to pay $300 upfront for administrative fees, without knowing the total cost of the treatment. Later, I was informed that $16,676.00 was due to the hospital (proof available via screenshot).
I repeatedly tried to contact the assigned doctor via phone and WhatsApp messages — as requested, since I was abroad — with screenshots documenting my attempts. Communication was poorly coordinated and unhelpful.
Despite declaring my insurance immediately at the hospital, there was no proactive assistance or direct payment. I was left to manage all procedures and advance payments myself, despite paying for insurance and a supplemental plan since 2022.

I eventually returned to France alone and without assistance, going directly to the ER in Paris. Medical investigations are still ongoing.

As a long-term traveler, this was extremely stressful and disappointing. Europ Assistance failed to provide the support expected in a true medical emergency.

I do not recommend Europ Assistance for long-term travelers who expect reliable support during serious health emergencies abroad.
