I have had a couple of experiences with the European Sleeper now. Any new night train is exciting and I actively enjoyed the museum piece carriages, but some basics really need attention. Almost all toilets seem permanently out of action, and it’s hard to understand why this ongoing issue hasn’t been fixed when so many travellers comment on it. This pushes people to wander around at night when they should be able to stay settled. There also isn't any clear method to alert staff during a problem. The follow-up response from the company didn’t really address these structural gaps.Separately the lower bunks in the couchette compartment don't have the functionality you see on modern cars where the backrest from seat-mode is folded away. This means you have a very narrow place to lie down. It's not possible to select which bed is yours on booking. I could live without the aircon etc and I'm sure a lot of train nerds will agree it can be a selling point to be in vintage carriges but it doesn't feel ok to be paying ÖBB prices and not even having a functional toilet or place to lie. I will be taking day trains on these routes until things sound like they've reliably improved on the basic toilet level.
